At NIU STEAM, we know that science is more than a career path or set of facts. It’s a way of understanding and interacting with the world that’s available to everyone, not just a rarified few. The STEAM mindset begins in wonder and curiosity. We ask questions. How does this work? Why does this pattern exist in nature? How could we make this design different, and better? We strive to answer those questions together, in a community of curious learners. And we embrace the journey, knowing that every question answered uncovers a new wonder to explore.
Afterschool Programs
Mentorship, social time, homework help and the chance to delve deeply into science, technology and art projects of their choice – all in the labs, classrooms and libraries of Northern Illinois University. Our unique afterschool programs help students imagine themselves as college bound – and develop the skills and confidence to make that image a reality. Currently, our middle school afterschool program The Barb City STEAM Team and high school afterschool program NIU STEAM Studio are offered in partnership with NIU STEAM and DeKalb School District 428. Students enrolled in 6th – 12th grade get academic support, enrichment activities and family engagement.
STEAM Summer Camps
Our camps are led by a passionate, well-trained team who love to teach, laugh, and have fun. Join us for an epic summer adventure in a wide range of areas. Our campers return year after year because of connections they create with peers who share their interests and passions and with faculty and staff who nurture their creativity. This may be the first time a camper develops their own robot, film or video game or conducts an experiment of their own design. But it likely won’t be the last.
STEM Fest
STEM Fest is an in-person event in the fall.
This all-day, in-person event is held on the campus of Northern Illinois University with events and activities, presentations and chats with STEM experts. STEM Fest will inspire you when you discover your spark of STEAM inspiration!
STEAM Cafés
Our STEAM Cafes are fun, casual gatherings where adults can eat, drink and chat with STEM professionals about the latest scientific research. These events are free and open to the public and are brought to you by NIU STEAM in partnership with the NIU Alumni Association. They’re made possible with support from Thermo Fisher Scientific and Bayer Fund.

NIU STEAM strives to educate, connect with and entertain our community; thus we have created two unique podcasts. These free podcasts traverse a wide range of topics, guests and themes and seek to evoke discussions. So, please join our conversations and take a listen.
