A FREE High School Afterschool Program
STEAM Studio is an afterschool STEAM-based exploration program offered to D428 students who qualify for free or reduced lunch or who reside in the Annie Glidden North neighborhood. It takes place on the campus of Northern Illinois University.
Students investigate STEAM concepts through interactive projects and activities that interest them from content such as:
- Engineering & robotics.
- Maker activities.
- Art & digital media.
- Science exploration.

The program also includes:
- Career exploration.
- College and career readiness.
- Connections with local leaders and business owners.
- Homework help and mentoring by NIU students and staff.

Schedule and logistics
When?
Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:45-5:15 p.m. on days when DeKalb High School is in session.
Where?
In Swen Parson Hall, on the campus of Northern Illinois University.
Schedule
- 3:45-4:15 p.m. – college and career readiness
- 4:15-5:15 p.m. – students explore STEAM concepts and content
Transportation
Free Transportation is provided.
- At 2:45 a member of the STEAM Studio staff will accompany students from the high school to the university via the Huskie Bus line operated by the City of DeKalb. (Vouchers to ride the bus are provided.)
- A First Student school bus will transport students home.
