Student Positions

There are so many ways to get involved in NIU STEAM! Sure, we hope you visit STEM Fest or a STEM Cafe, but you can help us while you learn even more about science, technology, engineering, arts and math when you volunteer at an event or join our team of student workers.

Volunteer Positions

STEMfest (October)

Our largest on-campus event requires hundreds of volunteers to make the day a success. Wield a hammer or sling some slime. Come in costume, or not, and help more than 4,000 visitors learn to love science.

You don’t have to be a science major – there are plenty of jobs to go around:

  • Construction
  • Set up
  • Tear down
  • Staffing the event

Destination Imagination (April)

For the past five years, NIU has hosted Destination Imagination, a volunteer-led nonprofit organization whose purpose is to inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders. Annually, they offer seven new standards-based Challenges in STEM, Improv, Visual Arts, Service Learning and Early Learning.

We’re looking for roughly 100 students to help guide these young students to locations across campus, judge competitions, stand at competition doors to allow people in the rooms, be runners for scores, help with set-up and take-down.

Other Opportunities Throughout the Year

  • Assist with on campus events such as STEM Read.
  • Help with demonstration programs.
  • Construct new demos and displays.
  • Help with after-school STEAM clubs.
  • Mentor middle or high school students.
  • Volunteer your STEM student organization to participate in Family STEM/STEAM Nights at schools.

Paid Positions

Summer Camp Staff – Paid Positions

Each year we hire NIU students for various summer residential STEM camp staff positions. Check out this year’s camp schedules and topics. Previous experience at a camp or educational setting is desired, but not required.  The following paid positions are available:

  • Instructors – Help facilitate labs and lessons and work primarily during the day.
  • Counselors – Assist instructors during the day and be responsible for evening activities and dorm supervision overnight.
